2018 has so far been a good year here at Force International, with a number of projects being developed, some new, some existing.

We continue to work with OSCE (Organisation for Security Co-operation in Europe) in Kosovo developing the capacity of women in Kosovo Police.

As a continuation of training delivered on Leadership & Management and Operational Command a visit has been arranged for women officers to visit the UK and experience first-hand the contribution female operational commanders are making to the delivery of policing services and to women and girls in local communities.

In March we delivered leadership training to officers from the Ghana Police Service and continue to develop a course intended for delivery to officer cadets of the Ghana Police Service.

Following an invitation for our director Jane Townsley to deliver a guest lecture to the Gender Peace and Security Centre at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia in September 2017, she has been invited to contribute to an academic paper with two experienced academics on the subject of Gender Peace and Security, this is work in progress and we will keep this site updated on progress. Jane has also submitted her own research on the impact of Gender Responsive Policing on women officers, police organisations and the communities they serve. It is currently awaiting the response of peer review, we hope it will be accepted for publication in a prominent academic journal. Again, we will keep this site updated with progress as well as when and where it will be published.

On International Women’s Day, 2018, Jane Townsley was invited by DCAF (Democratic Control of Armed Forces) to represent Force International at an event in Geneva. She was a panellist at a “so what?” event hosted by the UN SDG lab and DCAF at the UN offices in Geneva. The event focused on SDGs 5 and 11, Gender Equality and Safer Cities. Force International were also represented at the Commonwealth Women’s Forum which took place in London between 16thand 18thApril, on the lead up to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2018. We were able to contribute to the discussions and the outcome document from the forum to be presented to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting on Friday 20thApril.

We continue our involvement with UNODC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime) delivering training to police officers and human rights officers in Egypt on police responses to violence against women. Having completed the delivery of 5 courses in 2017, to a total of 80 individals, we will be in Cairo again in 2018 to deliver a ‘Training of Trainers’ course so the response training can continue to be delivered to police and human rights officers across Egypt.
